Karosta Prison Hotel

A Brief History

Originally built as an infirmiry, the building soon became a prison for Russian soldiers in 1900 (Lonely Planet, 2014). Karosta Prison was a correction facility for Russian Soldiers who rebelled against Soviet routine, as well as also housing Soviet enemies throughout Germany, Latvia and Russia (Karosta, ND). The Nazi Government also often sent Latvian deserters to the prison in order to be jailed and then executed. The Prison is now formally recognised as a hotel since the Tourist Attraction provides a variety of different tours ranging from short Day tours to Overnight stays within the prison. In addition, the distinct portrayal of history is delivered through engaging actor participation, where visitors are required to sign a contract permitting themselves to be treated like historical prisoners of the prison.
