Introduction To Dark Tourism
Defined by various theorists as the attraction of tragedy, death and pain, the concept of Dark Tourism/ Thana-Tourism/ Black spots has been a rising area for research amongst current academia (Lennon & Foley, 2000; Rojek, 1993; White & Frew, 2013; Stone & Sharpley, 2008; Sharpley & Stone, 2009; Stone, 2006). Argued by Lennon & Foley (2012) that the concept of Dark Tourism is a contemporary occurrence with historic memory, the demand to see the horrible has been criticised by academics as an opportunity to commodify people’s suffering. On the other hand, academia have supported the existence of Dark Tourism by highlighting its ability to commemorate and grieve for victims (West, 2004). Stone (2006) however, suggests that some attractions are ‘darker’ than others according to their authenticity, characteristics and social views. As an example, Tuol Sleng Prison, Cambodia can be categorised as distinctly darker than that of the Merlin Entertainments franchise, The Dungeons.

Punishment and Dark Tourism
“To Punish” is to deliberately inflict consequences upon another with the intention of correcting unwelcome conducts (Merriam-Webster, 2014). It should be noted that conducts can be defined as anything that is associated with a person, group or culture and is not limited to actions (Oxford Dictionaries, 2014). Dark Tourist attractions can be defined as points of interest which directly relate or are associated with events of death and suffering (Stone, 2006; Dehoorne & Jolliffe, 2013: 156). In addition, places of punishment can also be categorised as Dark Tourist attractions and can vary in incidence such as Alcatraz Prison, Robben Island, and The Dungeons Attraction Franchise (Sharpley & Stone, 2009: 20).
Punishment therefore provides several areas of interesting concepts with regards to politics, in which to explore possible representations that are expressed within the contemporary Tourism industry.
This Website will focus upon the politics within Dark Tourism, with particular dark events being studied around the theme of Punishment. Analysis will be completed that surrounds the tensions of Dark Tourism and Thana-events, whilst critically discussing the current issues and possible consequences that have/may arise as a result. Using appropriate historical examples and academic theories, the assignment will discuss original and contemporary concepts in order to form a stable conclusion.
