PUNISHMENT
Conclusion

To conclude, the politics within Dark Tourism are observable due to the heritage in which the attraction is founded upon. On the one hand, Politics can control the interpretation of events for visitors through the decision to selectively display artefacts and historic evidence of the Dark Event. On the other hand, Politics can also encourage tourism activity within such sites through visits, tours and promotion of a site. Dark Tourism has experienced political influence within several sites of punishment, as is the case with Alcatraz Island, Tuol Sleng Prison, Robben Island and Karosta Prison. With regards to the ethical issues, it is clear that political influences in Dark Tourism can have differing intentions to encourage Tourism within a site related to death and suffering. The question of ethics therefore is central to how the Attraction is represented. Political responses towards Dark Tourist Attractions are varied, with an inherent connection existing between the level of responsibility for the originating of death and suffering, and the
approach to promote or discourage the tourism consumption. Nevertheless, it is also clear that the authenticity of a site can also impact the interpretations that a visitor will make in response to visiting a Dark Tourist site.
This website has considered the concepts, issues and consequences of Politics within Dark Tourism. With specific references to Punishment as a key theme throughout, a critical response has been created. Overall, it is important for attractions to recognise the political interest that surrounds Dark Tourism in order to reduce the tensions between conflicting social groups and cultures.
